Only consider stories for deletion if people hate them.
They have to say, "This story sucks." or something along those lines in the comments.
Yeah. I'm sorry for not following this for a while.
A long time ago, I decided to put all of the spinoff Holders stories on this site, because of a similar push for the standard stories on the main site.
However, I now understand how much of a mistake this was. The Holders stories are repetitive and mostly standalone, and most of them should just be deleted.
This is especially important because, if the Holders stories are kept here, how can we argue that repetitive spinoff stories should be culled?
I hope any other admins on the site understand.
In two days (September 21st), all stories that are not in one of four categories will be deleted from the site in an effort to purge it of very bad quality stories. These four categories are:
The Quality Standards will be revised and made significantly stricter in addition to the purge.
There is a reason for this. Spin-off stories are generally held to a higher standard than original works; many of the ones here would fail the QS on our sister wiki.
Spinpasta should be holding spin-offs to this higher standard. You should be able to have a genuine shot at appealing your spin-off to the Creepypasta Wiki's spinoff appeal for it to meet the QS here - no, I'm not saying it should be guaranteed to make it. I'm saying that it should be good enough that it's actually a possibility.
That being said, if your story gets deleted and you feel that it would meet the revised QS you may post a Deletion Appeal once the purge has been completed and the new QS posted. If the story meets the new QS, it will be accepted and restored. You will also have the opportunity before the purge begins to have your story reviewed by an Administrator, and if the administrator deems that the story is good enough to stay it will be given the NoPurge category.
I realize that quite a few of you may not like this, but please be patient with us. If your story is good enough that it gets through the Deletion Appeal process, the increase in quality on site should help your story get more exposure as the removal of bad quality stories should help attract a community to the site.
The Purge will begin on September 30th.
As part of my overall attempt to clean up the site, I will be rebooting Suggested Reading (this) from scratch. Meaning, since I am unsure of all the works in the category being worth the category name, I will be removing them all and sorting it out over time. Some works do not need to be there: Others do. Some should be in there but aren't. (I think. Maybe.)
This is a notice that will be highlighted, so that anyone who wishes to be notified will be notified.
So, I just get back and I'm deleting shit stories that have been piling up on this brand new account that I made. I'm bored as hell, but I'm looking through Wikia Activity and I come across none other than this thread.
Not gonna lie, Maddie's Little Baby, one of the deleted stories, was mine. It was written about 3 years ago when I first starting writing for here. I'm also not gonna lie when I say that it went too far in that direction and it's not the first time I did it (There was another gorefic, a bit more violent and rapey, before we learned about the guidelines. It was a Phineas and Ferb fanfic I wrote out of boredom.) Maddie's Little Baby, at that point, was either forgotten about, or I just looked over it and didn't think too much into the subject.
But that said, let's get into the meat of this thread.
I see that you have other pages marked NSFW. Please can an admin look at these and remove any that contain torture porn or other extreme content.
Thank you
What gets me here is the use of "extreme." It's a rather subjective term, as has been discussed before, back in 2013 iirc. It bodes the question: Should we have regulations on site for NSFW works? Should NSFW stories be allowed? Should the ones we have be deleted even if they're only lightly NSFW?
Personally, I don't think they should be deleted on the basis of light NSFW. I'm a very anti-censorship person, particularly nowadays, and to start deleting works based on content alone kills the entire point of sites like this. It goes down a slippery slope about what can be found offensive or not. Is there a line of objectivity? Is the mere mention of a fetish NSFW or too far, or do you have to go into as much detail as I did with Maddie's Little Baby? Was my story the maximum extreme, or the minimum? I think I'll examine the quality of what we have and make my judgments based on quality for now, but I'm wondering: Should we have guidelines? If so, what should they be? If not, why not?
'Tis an objectively touchy subject indeed. NSFW works tend to be gorefics as is, and usually get deleted (on CPW, anyhow, hardly anyone is active here,) but of those few diamonds in the rough, is it worth not preserving them based on what's found offensive? Obviously, we have to follow Staff here, but where is the line to be drawn objectively? Discuss.
Now that I've gotten your attention, I'm trying to be back on Wikia again. Of course, this wiki is still pretty dead as a doornail, but after a bit of thinking, I'd like to try and revive it. Again.
Now, that said, let's make a plan. I've got a lot of things on my mind, but that's beside the point.
-First off, Quality Control. Probably need loads of it. We need to delete a ton of stuff, and get stories that are better in their places. That said, someone talk to that one skeleton and see if he can look through CPW's deletion log for any decent spin-offs. Thousands of deletions happened there; so he might know of two or three decent ones that can be moved here if they aren't already. Plus, we could use more active rights users. Provided that we KNOW they have the work ethic, temp RCaDC members (if that's still in existence) would be nice.
-After this, we could probably try for the spotlight. It'll take some work and a lot of clean-up first, but I think it would help some. For this, we'll need a custom background image. I don't care what it is as long as we can use it and it looks nice. That said, a new wordmark would be nice; we could probably even completely redo the theme.
-Since the admins are generally the only ones in existence atm, we need to take more time adding stories the same as we delete them. This keeps a steady flow of content.
-I'm still iffy on this one, but we could try to re-enable anonymous editing. The time we disabled it was due significantly to spam and vandalism; but it might also help activity.
That said, long time, no see. How ya been?
...never gets any votes. ...was generally forgotten about for half a year because it never gets any votes. ...is something that none of the staff members seem to particularly want to take over as an ongoing project.
I think it's time we put it on hiatus, at least until the community is large enough to merit having it. There just aren't enough people for an effective poll to happen right now, even if someone were to update it monthly.
Thoughts? Agreements? Dissention?
I made the Collaboration Project link right now, and users who see this thread can contribute to it.
Just remember to follow the theme. Make sure that it obeys the Quality Standards and the Cliché rules; read the rules before you post your piece, and make sure that you (the user) have fun when writing your part!
Just remember, it's all for fun!
The contest has ended. The winner is A Letter, by Fatal Disease, with runner-up, Blue Cat Blues, by SpaceManiac888.
Unfortunately, due to low turnout, this will not be a regular event.
After ThatGuy's recent contest on Creepypasta Wiki, I thought it might be a good idea to conduct a similar event here on Spinpasta. So enters the Spinpasta Spotlight, a chance for some perhaps less-appreciated or undiscovered pasta masterpieces to gain a little recognition and bask in the limelight.
Unlike Creepypasta of the Month, here, users are invited to present their own pastas for consideration, not anyone else's. The pastas will be judged over the course of the month by yours truly, and come the end of the month (in this case, Halloween), a winner selected by means of qualitative analysis. Assuming that this event is a success, the winner will be posted at the top of next month's page, and also earn a special tag for Spotlight winners. There will also be Honorable Mentions, so even if you don't win first place, your pasta may get some extra traffic.
With enough participation, this project will gain its own page in months to come, and some other admins might even get involved for the sake of variety.
RULES:
And with that, have at it! Feel free to post submissions, questions, and comments in this thread. I look forward to bringing some quality, unknown pastas to light.
This is a continuation of the Spinpasta Project that I decided to take over because I see hope in this.
Here are the theme suggestions that users have suggested in the last thread. It may not be a lot, but it can be manageable. Here are what the themes are, and on the bottom of the thread you can vote which theme should be covered. I suggest that you read these themes and see if you like them before voting.
Please vote on the themes, please. Voting will be open until October 20th (nearly a month to vote).
Due to the invasion that we were having, I was forced to close down the chat for a day. It'll be back up by morning, or whenever the invasion is done.
Thank you, and have a good day.
I still have hope for this to be an actual project, so I'm just going to take over this. Sure, it said on the thread announcing it that it was cancelled for lack of attention. But I still want to see it become what it becomes.
So here, you suggest on what the plot should be, and a thread will be created later on for users to vote which plot should be the theme of the story. Then a project page will be created for users to create one - three paragraphs.
Keep in mind that there should be no blacklisted topics (SCP, Sonic.exe, and Jeff-inspired) will not be accepted, and your response will be removed from the thread.
So, give us some suggestions! As I will be giving a suggestion for this!
Update: This process will go up to the 15th, and voting for which topic will commence for the remainder of the month. Writing it will take a month (since this is a very sleepy wiki), then title suggestions.
On September, Spinpasta will be hosting a collaborative writing project between its users. However, suggestions will need placed for a specific theme (that is not a Blacklisted Subject).
So, those of whom would like to suggest a theme may do so in the comments section of this post.
The rules:
On September 1st, going until October 31st (Halloween), a Project page will be put up where the project will be posted.
MLP pastas and grimdarks are now blacklisted. Before you jump on my case about it, 1. There is and has been another place where these stories can go, 2. We have too many of them. This wiki isn't solely about MLP.
We get alot of these almost daily, so the only MLP grimdarks are those involving unfinished series. There are a ridiculous number of them, so, it had to end sometime. Sorry. :/
Alright. Lately, there has been a situation with the Classics Category. The Classics category pretty much holds articles that were created before and within a year after the wiki was created. Since this wiki is still a baby wiki, only being a year and 5 months old, I have three options relating to the category.
Option A: Re-classify the time period when the category is allowed on articles, and revoke the rule that Suggested Reading and Classics as a conflicting category.
What this means is that articles that were created before the wiki was created, and within a 2-4 month period, that are qualitative, are put in this category. And the rule that separates Classics and Suggested Reading from being together on a page is removed from our rules.
Option B: Re-classify the time period when the category is allowed on articles, but keep the rule separating Suggested Reading and Classics.
Same thing as option A, but the site keeps the rule separating SR and Classics
Option C: We get rid of the Classics Category.
The wiki seems to be in the wrong period to have this category allowed on this wiki. It's over a year old, and shouldn't have the category. The category will be removed from articles and, if they are worthy, will be replaced with the Suggested Reading category.
So, to start off voting, I feel like Option A. It's confusing to have an article that was created in October of 2013 to be in this category.
EDIT: I am actually changing my vote to Option C. The site is too young to have this category to be on here. Agreeing with what Xelrog said, and disagreeing with what Callie said.
Yep. I'm proposing to get rid of these. Usually, I wouldn't have to, but since Fatal has decided that it would be better to keep them we have opted for a community decision.
Why would I want to get rid of something where a user could express their opinion? Because no one uses them, no creates applications, no one has anything to do with them. They need to be gone. They are doing nothing but taking up space and the community only gets the say of "support" or "oppose". Very rarely are applications considered soley by community action. It's slightly involved, but we generally judge by job merit.
All admins have the ability to grant rights. Fatal, Skelly and I grant admin and bureaucrat on top of the other three, which admins can grant. (rollback, RCaDC, and Chat Moderator) It wouldn't necessarily be a barrage on all of our talk pages, and the size of the community is too small to have these.
What do I propose in return? All staff can decide upon the three universal rights. This can be disputed by another admin, if they have a reason behind why said person shouldn't have the right. It can also be disputed by the individual via reporting wrongdoings or power abuse, and can be disputed by the community itself via thread. Bureaucrats have the additional ability to decide upon administrators and other crats, but heavy discussion can also be put into it.
But where's your say in who gets the rights? Well, during the time between selecting a user for a right and actually granting the right (varying from instant for rollback, 5 days for Chat Mod, 10 days for RCaDC, and 15 for admin, with 20 for bureaucrat.) a thread will come up on an occasional basis. (We wouldn't be promoting willy nilly. Whereas we will promote on an as needed basis, at best we would demote inactive users and select new ones every 3 months.) You can input your opinion and facts behind the behavior of the user, and we will investigate.
Prereqs will also be dictated for the users selected for rights, not dependant on edits and other things, but dependant upon: Their ability to help the wiki, their skills in editing, whether it is fixing broken redirects or correcting grammar, their time on the wiki, their previous experience and their general attitude towards the user base. Basically, the community gets a fair opinion but rights can be chosen on an as needed basis or a set time of every three months, the latter being the usual case.
This is a much fairer system to both the user base itself and the staff of the wiki. It would also gain a slight bit more notice and since it will be instituted by staff, more use.
